project description

What is radioeinszueins?

radioeinszueins = one to one radio

Radioeinszueins transfers the cultural life of Berlin into a radio channel. The terrestrial and internet transmission of recordings of concerts, parties, readings, lectures and discussions make the extraordinary bandwidth of cultural production audible to a both a local and global audience.

What makes Radioeinzueins extraordinary?

Radioeinszueins tries to make radio interesting again - for those who turned their backs on this medium - and challenge format radio as the only possible broadcast. Radioeinszueins plays recordings of cultural events in Berlin instead of instead snippets and reportage. Using digital technology to record and archive the events, the public can tune in to what they missed out on in the city!

What kinds of events does Radioeinszueins broadcast?

We broadcast a program of recordings from live events - often missed because there is too much going on in the city. No mobile studio in a truck, we’re using the internet. We make exiting events directly audible on air and online. As an alternative to rotation formats, which determine the entire radio landscape today, Radioeinszueins develops a docu-format - recording what is happening in the city and broadcasting that locally via terrestrial radio and worldwide via the net.

What other types of content does Radioeinszueins broadcast?

The core of the program is recordings of events - mostly in Berlin. There is also airtime for pre-recorded material from local and international artists and cultural producers and some live studio shows. (formats can be: podcasts, artists performances, netlabel shows, webcasts, shoutcasts)

How can I participate?

Please read our call for open contributions to find out how to send in your own material to get broadcasted (on air and online).

How can I listen to radioeinszueins?

Radioeinszueins is on the airwaves in Berlin on 95.2 FM and on the internet for the duration of the World Cup 2006 (June and July). You can also use an mp3 player on your Computer to tune into our mp3 stream. For low bandwidth we provide an ogg vorbis stream. If you need more support please describe your situation.

What does it have to do with football?

It is Berlin, it is the World Cup - What doesn’t have to do with Football.

Is there a political statement ?

Radioeinszueins continues the tradition of Berlin based free cultural radio projects like Juniradio.net, Radio Riff and reboot.fm. The long term goal is proving that free radio, combined with free software and digital technology is a viable, cost effective and culturally relevant form of local media. Working with pre-produced and archived material from event locations is one way of giving voice to the many cultural producers in Berlin.

What the cultural politics?

Most of all we want to prevent the “deflagration of the culture in the event and stimulate the cultural institutions to achieve a more systematic archiving of their events. Given the current technologies it is hard to understand why a lecture or a dj-set is merely audible only for those who have the ability to be at the place - “live. That’s why we offer these events in our channel. At the same time we do want to make culture available outside of social rituals, which occur arround every event space and might exclude other types of audiences. In a radio channel the “social barriers of fragmented subcultural worlds become secondary, in our program products of the so called hi- and low culture stand right next to each other. Most of all radioeinszueins will be a platform of networking between the cultural institutions, as well as the listeners themselves, which can enter from all over the internet.

What is your media strategy?

We want to use a flexible and pragmatic form of production differing from the format rotation and bureaucratic work methods of the public broadcasters. The element of participation forms the new potentials of the medium of radio. The changes is not only digital, but is triggered by a combination of old and new media, of a combination of broadcasting and internet, radio receiver and mp3 player. Our participants are in this phase mainly the local content aggregators of the cultural world, venues with frequent events of hi quality. The genremix of the niche programs for all kinds of audiences is the challenge of the mp3 player generation. We will not deliver a replacement but a considereable extension of the existing program formats.

What is the financial model of radioeinszueins?

radioeinszueins is a project of Klubradio gmbh and is supported by the Haupstadtkulturfonds Berlin. It is a noncommercial, temporary project. We also thank Terratec gmbh for hardware, and the participating venues and institutions for their openness and engagement.

Will you transmit live from events?

No. the recording and transmission will not happen in real time but with a certain delay. Frequent recording will start in may.

How does it function technically and legally ?

Each of the participating event spaces will be equipped with a recording device that receives the calendar data of the editorial and starts automatically to record. Afterwards the recording will be transfered to an internet server and the editorial is selecting a part of it, inserting moderation and intros and putting it into the daily transmission loop. Additionally singular events will be recorded with mobile devices.

Through a fine tuned contract and according contributions to the royality collecting agencies current copyright law provisions will be met, even if we do not agree with them.
